Ive read a lot of raves for Skeleton Key,
Andi Watsons other indy title but never picked up an issue. Oni Press has been
making quite a splash with their Clerks comic and while they probably
wont make as big a splash with Geisha (no cult movie tie-in) it
really does deserve praise.
Geisha follows a synthetic being known as Jomi Sohodo who was adopted and raised by a human as a humanitarian experiment to prove she would develop like any other child. It seems Jomi has; shes an aspiring painter but no one will buy her art. So to make ends meet, Jomi decides to take a job in her dads personal security firmshe becomes a bodyguard. Being a synthetic being, Jomi is pretty darn tough. Perfect for the job but its not a job she really wants. Is not really what her father wants for her either and he plans on only giving her the most boring of assignments so shell go back to tackling her painting.
Andi Watsons stylized artwork and storytelling in Geisha are well worth the $2.95 price tag. Geisha is slated to be a 4 issue mini-series and after reading the first issue I will be there for the other three
Issues #1, 2 and 3 are out as I write and if you cant find these issues at your local comic shop try Oni Press, 6336 SE Milwaukie Avenue, Suite #30, Portland, OR 97202. You can go to Andi Watsons official web site at www.andiwatson.com or check out the Oni Press web site at www.onipress.com.
